Leadership in Public Affairs 2004
| Leadership in Public Affairs 2004 is a free DVD containing
several features on the community-based deliberative democracy forums run by
the LPA. Contents include: |
 | Community Leadership One Link at a Time. A 12 minute
documentary based on the Spring, 2004 Public Issues Summit. Without
dwelling on the details of the theory of deliberative democracy this piece
does an excellent job of conveying the positive atmosphere of community

(6 minutes). This material provides a bit more insight on the
purposes of deliberative forums. |
| Keynotes from the Fall 2003 (Brian Hughes, Mercer County Executive),
and Spring 2004 (DeForrest Soaries, former N.J. Secretary of State) Public
Issues Forums (32 minutes total). These are primarily of interest to
audiences in central New Jersey but they do contain comments on the value
of citizen participation in local policy making.

| Deliberative Democracy: Re-Creating Citizen Politics a 20
minute presentation originally distributed in 2002. It explains the nature
of deliberative democracy, contrasts it to the typical means of citizen
participation in politics, and illustrates these points with case studies
of two deliberative forums held by the LPA program at The College of New
Jersey during the 2001-2002 academic year.
